Wishes for the Promotion of Cooperation

Seong Min Hong

President, KYC

Yemen was a very strange place to Koreans. That's why Koreans couldn't remember the name of Yemen easily only five years ago. Suddenly the unification between the South Yemen and the North Yemen was pronounced on May 22, 1990 through mass media. As Korea has been divided two countries since 1945, in this point, Koreans have a deep sympathy with Yemenis. After the Republic of Yemen was declared at that time, most of Koreans began to have an interest in the Yemeni unification.

My personal concern about Yemen stemmed from the event of the unification. Luckily I visited Yemen in August 1991 as a member of Korea Research Team of Unification. At that time, I discovered Yemen has a long history and her people take pride in it. Beyond my expectations, I found great potentials for economic development in Yemen, From then, I have studied on Yemen continuously. The scholars and students who were interested in Yemen problems gathered around me. As a result, RIES, Research Institute of the East-West Economy & Society, established 'Korea - Yemen Center' on December 29, 1994 in order to found a Yemeni studies and increase the promotion of exchanges between Korea and Yemen. It is true, however, that the significant cooperation has not been realized between Korea and Yemen, though the full diplomatic relations between two countries were established on August 22, 1985.

The study of Yemen has to precede other Arabian studies in order to know essentially the Arabic history, language and culture. In Korea, Yemeni studies urgently needs to increase not only the increasing export-import but the common interests and development between Korea and Yemen. It is also necessary for Korea, co-shared a disintegrated grief, to study Yemen basically for the promoting the exchanges of human resources and materials.

In connection with it, our Korea-Yemen Center will make an effort to introduce each other, to link the business activities, and to promote the cooperative relations between Korea and Yemen. For the performing of this objective, KYC will do its best to inform the news, to collect the information, to promote academic exchanges, to carry out the cultural events, to hold sisterhood relations, to recommend the business firms, and to perform other available projects. The helping of person and body interested in our center will be the best way to realize our efforts. I am waiting for a good advice.

News from Korea

Korean Manufacturing Companies enjoyed a Sharp Growth

In an analysis of 491 listed companies whose fiscal year ends December 31, the Securities Supervisory Board(SSB) said that their combined revenue stood at 310.04 trillion won in 1995, up 24.9 percent from 248.09 trillion won in 1994. This growth growth rate is 6.9 percentage points higher than the previous year's 18.0 percent. Meanwhile, net profits of 491 listed companies soared 34.1 percent to 78 trillion won from a year ago---in terms of growth, sharply down from 90.6 percent 1994.

In sharp contrast, non-manufacturing companies posted a meager 4.4 percent growth in their net profits despite a significant 27.9 percent growth in their total sales. It was largely because of the lack-luster performance of construction firms last year. In particular, banking companies plunged to a negative 15.1 percent in net profits last year in spite of a 27.9 percent increase in turnover. Banking experts blamed snowballing increase in their non-performing loans and stock paper losses. By industry, the wholesale and retail sector posted the best performance in 1995 - a 33.4 percent surge in revenue.

Industrial Production Recorded the Highest since 1988

Korea's industrial production recorded the highest growth rate last year in seven years with the help of brisk exports and facility investment. However, industrial polarization between light and heavy industries was worsened. According to the 1995 annual report of industrial production released by the National Statistical Office, because of outstanding performance of semiconductors and automobiles both in domestic and overseas markets, industrial production recorded an increase rate of 11.9 percent, the highest since 1988 which saw 13.2 percent growth. By business line, semiconductors performed well with 48.1 percent growth, office equipment with 39.4 percent, machinery equipment with 17.4 percent and automobiles with 17 percent. Thus, the heavy and chemical industry recorded a combined average 15.8 percent growth.
