Why do we study the Middle-East area?

The conflicts between Israel and Palestine have always been hot issues in a foreign news. These problems remain and will remain difficult to bring a solution which will be satisfactory to both sides. The factor that makes it more difficult is that these problems don't concern only the two countries. But their neighborhood, for example Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Egypt, are also involved in these problems directly or indirectly. Because Israel has occupied some of their territories since last thirty years. Therefore, it is important to say about the politics, economics and social structure of Middle East Area without knowing those of these countries which are surrounding Israel and Palestine.

In historical aspect, the core of Middle East culture was transferred from Mecca in Saudi Arabia where Islam had been founded, to Istanbul in the Ottoman, Turkish if you like, Empire through Damascus in the Ummayyads Dynasty, and Iran where the Persian culture had been flourished, and Baghdad in the Abbassid Dynasty. Now each culture is activated vividly with a capital of each country as a pivot. It is in this respect that it is necessary that we integrate synchronical and diachronic studies about Middle East Area. In other words, we put our focus on economic and cultural aspects in this Area considering actuality and history. So we are ready to intend to go through our studies from Iraqi which was the cradle of Euphrates and Tigris Culture, to Syria which was the birthplace of the Ummayyads Dynasty through Saudi Arabia which was the root of Islam Culture.

Dr.Jooheon KANG,

Director of Research

Geographically Middle East contains a vast region from West Asia to North Africa, and etiologically it consists of various races such as Arab, Turk, Iranian, Jew and other minorities. More than that, in Middle East as cradle of religion coexist Christianity , Islam and Judaism. Therefore Middle East has to be studied more widely than any other countries in the world.

To put it perhaps a little too strongly, the problem in Middle East is like our Korean's problem. As most of our energy source, petroleum, is imported from Middle East Area. Being locally seen, some conflicts that we can notice in Middle East cannot be not directly connected with our interest. However, most aspects in Middle East's lives can have great influence in our country, Korea, if we take a broad view, and particularly we consider the economic development in the countries concerned and the petroleum supply to Korea, especially from this Area. Therefore it is a natural stream to study all of possible problems that may be occurred in this Area. That is why we should Middle East Area urgently and deeply.

Visit to Syria

(Damascus)

The Korean National Flag, T'aegukki

T'aegukki, the Korean National Flag, is the symbol of thought, philosophy and mysticism of Koreans through 5,000 years of history. Its name originated from the T'aegukcircle in the center of the flag. T'aegukki has a circle in the center and bars in the 4 corners, divided equally & in perfect balance.

The red upper section represents the positive element of nature 'Yang' and the blue lower 'Yin', an ancient symbol of the universe - of the great cosmic forces that oppose each other but achieve perfect harmony

and balance:fire and water, day and night, dark and light, construction and destruction, masculine and feminine, active and passive, heat and cold, plus and minus, and so on.

The three bars at each corner also carry the ideas of opposition and balance. The three unbroken lines stand for heaven; the opposite three broken lines represent earth. At the lower left hand corner are two lines with a broken line between, symbolizing fire. Diagonally opposite is the symbol of water. The white background symbolizes the purity of the Korean people and their peace-loving spirit. The flag as a whole symbolizes the ideal of the Korean people developing forever in harmony with the universe.(Facts about Korea, 1995)

The Korean flag is called t'aegukki.

Taegukki is the symbol of thought, philosophy and mysticism of Koreans through 5,000 years of history. The flag has a circle in the center and bars in the 4 corners, divided equally & in perfect balance. The upper red section represents the positive element of nature "Yang"and the lower blue, the negative element, "Um", thus comprising the whole universe. These two opposites harmonize the dualim of the cosmos, fire and water, day and night, light and darkness, masculine, plus and minus, active and passive, in a word the cosmos is composed of "positive and negative".In another word the cosmos is keeping the constant movement toward the eternity in balance and harmony. Each bar group stands for its own meaning, 3 bars on the upper left stands for Heaven (), 5 bars on the lower right, for Earth (), 4 bars on the lower left for Fire () and 5 bars on the upper right for Water ().

National Flower

National Flower

The national flower of Korea is the Mugunghwa or Rose of Sharon. Mugunghwa is remarkably tenacious and is able to withstand both blight and insects. The flower's symbolic significance stems from Mugunghwa's root word, "Mugung," meaning immortality. This word accurately reflects the perseverance and determination of the Korean people that has been demonstrated throughout their long history.
