AFMA International Symposium in Seoul
This Symposium gave me a great impression with the typical Korean Autumn greetings. Many participants both Korean and Japanese, Chinese and Mongolia were attended this meeting to promote the academic cooperation among Asian countries. Session Ⅰ and Ⅱ were held on Saturday, October 18, 1997 at Myungji University. Each Session was divided into 4 parts by the scope of study. Especially the panel name was very interesting. Panel I Oasis dealt with political science and economics. Panel 2 Minalet dealt with history, culture and religion. Panel 3 The Tower of Babel dealt with linguistics. Panel 4 Mirage dealt with literature. All the sessions proceeded with the same name of 4 panels. In front of the familiar Arab name of the panel, all the participants felt smells of the desert and and the Middle Eastern mood. Session III also held on the next day at Capital Hotel. Total 26 valuable papers were presented and read by official English language including Arabic language. Heated controversy on the special Middle Eastern topic among Asian countries' scholars in the strange Asia was very impressive. AFMA symposium in Seoul rendered a good opportunity to seek common interest on the matters of the Middle East issues in Asian Middle Eastern scholars. Besides it, this opportunity gave a potential for cooperation to encourage the exchange of information and knowledge, to promote the Middle East studies among Asian countries. Furthermore, symposium like this has to hold frequently where there is need. It also has to continue and spread beyond Asian region. More Scholars between Asia and the Middle East have to get in touch and come and go. This symposium gave me a good lesson and reminded me of famous proverbs "Seeing is believing."
UAE를 구성하는 일곱 개의 Emirate는 주로 Abu Dhabi의 대규모 원유 매장량과 선택적인 경제전략의 일환으로 두바이의 상징적인 투자 때문에 주변 이웃 국가들보다는 훨씬 커다란 압력을 감내 하고 있다. 그러나 UAE가 걸프지역내에서 다시는 만족하지 못할 것을 확신하는 과거와 미래의 예감이 존재하고 있다.

2. 정치약사 16세기초 걸프지역에서 포르투갈인들의 상업적 독점권은 유럽국가들, 즉 처음에는 네델란드 그리고 다음에는 영국에 의해 도전받고 있었다. 1650년 오만으로부터 포르투갈이 철수하자마자, 네델란드와 영국의 각축장이 되었다. 19세기 영국인이 도착했을 때 UAE는 협상해안(Trucial Coast)으로 알려진 지역을 7명의 독립된 에미레이트들이 연합하여 통치하고 있었다. ■ BC 3000년경 : 수메르시대에 교역과 상업의 중심지 ■ 16세기초: 포르투갈인 독점적인 상업활동 전개 ■ 1622년 : 영국의 지원하에 샤 압바스(Shah Abbas) 포르투갈 세력 축출, 그 이후 영국이 주도권 장악 ■ 1650년 : 포르투갈인 아라비아해에서 주도권을 상실하고 오만으로 철수 ■ 1820년 : 영국과 대형 선박과 요새 신축을 금지하는 일반평화협정(General Peace Treaty) 체결 ■ 1853년 : 영국과 항구적 해상평화조약(Perpetual Maritime Truce Treaty) 체결 ■ 1892년 : 협상해안(Trucial Coast) 영국의 보호령이 됨, 영국은 국방 및 외교정책을 통제 ■ 1903년 : 영국과 인도간 두바이 정기항로 개설로 두바이 근대화 시작 ■ 1932년 : 영국의 British Imperial Airway사 샤르자에 공항 개설, 원유의 매장 가능성 확인 ■ 1952년 : 에미레이트들 Trucial States Council 창설 ■ 1958년 : 아부 다비에서 최초로 원유 발견 ■ 1965년 : 아부 다비에 방위군 창설 ■ 1971년 : 영국으로부터 독립하여 아랍에미레이트연합, UAE(United Arab Emirates)라는 이름으로 국가 수립(12월 2일), 아부 다비의 지도자 세이크 자이드(Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan)가 연방의 대통령이 됨 ■ 1979년 : 두바이의 지도자 세이크 막토움(Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al-Maktoum) 수상에 임명됨(6. 25) ■ 1981년 : UAE 중앙은행(UAE Central Bank) 설립 ■ 1991년 : 세이크 자이드(Sheikh Zayed) 1971년이후 대통령에 연임됨 ■ 1994년 : 미국(7월) 및 프랑스(9월)와 안보조약 체결 ■ 1996년 : UAE 탄생 25주년(세이크 자이드 아부다비의 지도자가 된지 30년)

Official Visit of Tunisian Minister of Higher Education H. E. Dali Jazi, minister of higher education of the Republic of Tunisia visited Korea officially on September. On the occasion of his official visit, the Ambassador of the Republic of Tunisia, H. E. Elyes KASRI held a reception at the Ambassador's residence on Thursday, September 11, 1997. Exhibition of 'Libya-Cradle of the Civilizations' The People's Bureau of Libyan Arab Jamahiriya held a photo exhibition, 'Libya-Cradle of the Civilization'. In commemoration of the 28th anniversary of the Great Al-Fat eh Revolution, it was specially opened on Friday, Sept. 19, 1997 at the exhibition hall of the National Library of Korea in Seoul. KIME President Attended the 2nd International Symposium The 2nd International Symposium of AFMA, Asian Federation of Middle East Studies Associations held on October 17-20, 1997 at Myongji University and Capital Hotel in Seoul, Korea. Prof. Dr. Seong Min Hong, president of KIME attended this symposium and read the paper under the title of "Economic Cooperation in the Middle East".
KIME, [중동 경제개황] 발간 중동경제연구소는 1997년도 연구 사업의 일환으로 지난 7월 [중동경제개황] (The General Economy of The MIDDLE EAST: 명지출판사)을 발간하였다. [중동경제개황]은 KIME가 규정한 중동, 아랍 22개국의 역사, 일반개황, 주요 경제지표 및 한국과의 관계 등을 간략하고 알기 쉽게 정리하였다. 따라서 본 책자는 중동을 단편적으로 이해하는데 커다란 도움이 되리라 기대된다. KIME는 앞으로 이들 22개국에 대한 한글판 안내 책자를 계속 발간해 나갈 예정이다. KIME 임원진 UAE 대사관 방문 KIME 임원진 일동은 지난 7월에 이어 10월 21일 UAE 대사관을 방문하고 향후 KIME와 UAE 대사관과의 협력 문제에 관해 폭 넓은 의견을 개진하였다. 두 차례에 걸친 방문에서 KIME 홍성민 박사와 UAE 대사관 Mohammed S. Al-Sweidi 대리대사는 학술 교류는 물론 양국간 경제 교류의 활성화에 관한 문제를 심도 있게 다루었다.
