First International Conference of Turkey and Korea
(Dr. S. M. Hong, President) |
The beginning of Asiana Airline's flight to Istanbul on May 5, 1997 makes short ten hours' distance from Korea to Turkey. As if they congratulated it, the first international conference that was very meaningful held in Istanbul, the second city of Turkey on May 12. The conference, co-organized by Korean-Turkish Academic Society and The Turkic Studies Institute of Marmara University held in the of ¡°International Conference on Cooperation of Turkey and Korea¡± in Marmara University. The inaugurated conference by the opening address of Prof. Dr. Nadir Devlet, Director of the Turkic Studies
|
Institute of Marmara University was congratulated by the addresses of Prof. ¥òmer Faruk Batirel, President of Marmara University and Prof. Suh Jae-Man, President of Korean-Turkish Academic Society. In the forenoon session, six participants read the papers on the subject of ¡°Economic Development and Relations¡±. In the afternoon session, eight participants read the papers on the subject of ¡°Cultural and Social Relationship¡±. The conference finished at six, prolonging the scheduled time by one hour and promising the meeting.
I was very much impressed by the great concern of the Turkish to Korea. And it was great memorable that professors and students discussed the contents of the articles presented at the conference, clinging on the seat all the time. In particular, enthusiasm of the professors and graduate students who have great concern in Korean economic development seems cry out for the next conference.
Turkey recognized Korean government in 1949 and participated in the Korean War (1950-3). In 1957, Turkey became the fist nation that had established diplomatic relation with Korea officially in the Middle East. Two countries formed a friendly relationship and has continued good relations until now. Any way, this conference would be a good impetus to promote mutual understanding and interrelationship between two countries in the future. Therefore, we wish for having more opportunities like this conference, in Turkey or in Korea, not only for the mutual understanding but for the exchange of culture and learning.
I thanked Prof. Dr. Erol Manisal of Istanbul University for sparing no effort to realize the conference, and Prof. Dr. Nadir Devlet and Prof. Omer Faruk Batirelsoau for preparing this conference with sincerity. I also want to thank Mr. Onol Akal©¥n chairman of TURKTRADE for arranging ¡°special lecture on Korean Economy by Prof. Park¡±with zealous interest on Korean economy. It is not forgettable that Korean habitants and students in Turkey took part in the conference though very busy on their business.

Korean People
The Koreans one ethnic family speaking one language Linguistic and anthropological studies as well as legendary sources clearly distinguish Korean from the Chinese and the Japanese. Sharing distinct physical characteristics, they are believed to be descendants of several Mongol tribes which migrated onto the Korean Peninsula Central Asia.
Korean were homeogenous people by the beginning of the Christian era. in the seventh century A.D., they were politically unified for the first time by the shila Kingdom(57 BC - AD 935) and subsequently witnesses a great cultural flowering. the Korean people struggled successfully for millennia to maintain their cultural and political identity despite the influence of neighboring China and the more recent aggressive inclinations of the Japanese. They are proud people with one the longest national histories in the world.
The Republic of Korea had a population of 44.5 million 1994 and registered a density of 447 persons per square kilometer. The population of North Korea was 23.5 Million in 1994. Minority groups are almost nonexistent in Korea, apart from some 30,000 Chinese whom are Mostly long-tern residents in the capital area.
