Azalea

Translated by S.M. Hong

When you take your leave

Weary of seeing me,

Gently and silently I'll bid you go.

Upon the Yagsan hill of Yeongbyeon

I'll break off an armful of azalea flowers,

And strew them over your path.

Step by step, forwarding

Strewed the flowers for you,

Tread them softly with a light step

When you take your leave

Weary of seeing me,

I'll never weep for you though die.

Note:

1) Azalea, literally Jindalae flower, is a famous Korean poem (written by Kim Sowoul in 1925). I translated it into English with my dilettante life without a knowledge of literature. Would you be kind enough to understand me, if I hurted lovers' feeling of literature?

2) The Yagsan hill of Yeongbyeon means Mt. Yag, in Yeongbyeon region which is located on Pyunganbukdo Korea, is famous for flowers of azalea.

The Azalea

Translated by Jeong Inseob

When you take your leave

Tired of seeing me,

Gently and silently I'll bid you go.

From Mount Yag of Yeongbyeon

An armful of azaleas I shall pick,

And strew them in your path.

Go now, I pray, with short steps!

Let each foot-step gently them,

The flowers which I have spread for you.

When you take your leave,

Tired of seeing me,

Though I should die, I shall not weep.

Note: Recentely I found a poem, "The Azalea", translated by Jeong Inseob in my univerty's note of 1970s. I introduce Jeong's translation here. I owe his translation and appreciate his pioneering work. (July 22, 2010)
